The Chatteris Food Bank distributes in Chatteris but is part of the Trussell Trust Ely Food Bank, working alongside food banks in Ely and March to reach out to those in crisis in Fenland.
Each week between 5 - 15 parcels of food and toiletries are handed out by local volunteers to individuals and families living in Chatteris. Many do not realise that we never miss a week. We even handed out food parcels to needy people on Christmas day. We work in partnership with other agencies including: the local schools, Age Concern, the doctor's surgery, the job center, social services and the children's center. There is always a need for more donations all through the year so please consider if you can help. There is a permanent collection box at the back of the parish church, by the font.
Can you help? Here is a list of what is needed. Please remember that we can only use products which have 3 months left on their 'best before' date. Thank you!
- UHT milk and long-life fruit juice
- Tins - meat, fish, vegetables, beans
- Sugar, biscuits, rice pudding Coffee, tea, jam
- Pasta, rice, cereal
- toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, etc
- baby supplies: nappies and baby products
- general household cleaning supplies
The aim of the Food Bank is to provide short term, emergency food for people in crisis through a voucher system. Vouchers are given out by agencies working alongside the Food Bank. Each voucher entitles the client to three days emergency food. At the point of distribution, we encourage people to stay for a coffee and a chat and where possible offer help and advice with difficulties they may be experiencing. We then try to signpost them to agencies who are able to give them the long term support they might need. Anyone visiting the Food Bank is treated in complete confidence.
Distribution in Chatteris takes place in the Bricstan Hall, behind the church, on Thursdays 12:30 - 1:30 pm.
Where and when can I drop food donations?
Donations can be dropped off on weekdays between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm. We have a collection point in the Parish Church for any donations. The parish church is open every day from 8 - 3 pm. As you enter the main doors, a large plastic collection box is located to the left, by the font. The box is labeled FOOD BANK and emptied on a daily basis and taken to a temporary storage facility in Ely. All the administration (weighing and checking), and food parcels are put together in Ely before being brought back to Chatteris for distribution.
